Why Pride Month matters at WeAre8 and how we support it

Do you care about creating a world built on equality and inclusion? We do too. Imagine a community that champions love, not hate, where everyone feels valued, inspired and empowered to be their most authentic and visible selves, one that recognises the immense power of every individual and gives them a platform to do something incredible every single day? Here at WeAre8, that’s what we’re building.

That’s one of the many reasons why June is an incredibly important month for us. Pride is a significant landmark in the celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and queer culture, and at WeAre8 inclusivity is woven into the very fabric of who we are as a business and why we exist.

It’s a time for us to recognise how far we’ve come, but to consider too the road ahead, and make conscious decisions about how we will continue to influence the future of LGBTQ+ rights.

Celebrated in the month of June to mark the very first Stonewall riots back in 1969, Pride month is a moment of unity that reminds us of the huge impact of collective action. When we stand together, we achieve more - and unfortunately, too many of our valued community have experienced first hand just how far there is still to go in the fight against hate.

This month, I am calling on our 8Citizens to tell us what pride and inclusivity means to them, and I have been humbled by the incredible outpouring of love. We stand together, united, believing completely in the immense power of love to overcome hate, in freedom over fear, and celebration over judgement.

At WeAre8, it’s all about uniting, supporting and collective action which gives back to people and communities. Every time you watch a brand video a direct donation is made to our charity partners. You can also take your power in your own hands by paying your 8 Wallet forward to a cause you love. Here are some of our charity partners you can donate to or get support from right now:

  • The Albert Kennedy Trust supports young people into safe homes and employment, education or training ensuring an environment that welcomes and celebrates LGBTQ+ identities. A shocking 77% of ATK’s LGBTQ+ young people believe their sexuality was the cause of their homelessness, demonstrating the important work of this charity.
  • Just Like Us is changing the face of LGBTQ+ education, through school talks, support groups and dedicated events to promote pride and allyship around the UK. Education and understanding is at the core of shaping united communities.
  • Switchboard’s LGBTQ+ helpline has been providing a crucial service since 1974, offering advice and support to those who need it most within the queer community.

No action is ever too small and every positive action can make a difference, so what are you waiting for? Download WeAre8 today and you can start building up your 8 Wallet straight away. Join us as we explore what pride means to you.
